November 23, 2010: Commonwealth v. John Cusick: 21 year old John Cusick was sentenced to six to twelve years in prison today by the Honorable Genece Brinkley for a 2009 car accident that nearly killed two Philadelphia Police Officers. Along with prison time Cusick will also have to serve 10 years probation. On June 28, 2009, Officers Richard Hayes and George Higginson were making a routine traffic stop on Aramingo Ave when the defendant slammed into the back of their cruiser at a high rate of speed. Officer Higginson was behind the stopped vehicle at the time and his face struck the trunk of the vehicle causing facial fractures. Officer Hayes was at the side of the stopped vehicle and the impact sent him airborne, causing him to actually land inside the car, lodged him into the dashboard, and causing massive head trauma and brain injuries. Officer Hayes was in a coma for over six months as a result of the crash and has had to learn how to walk and talk all over again. Cusick confessed to using narcotics and going on a drinking binge for over 12 hours before the crash happened. ADA Noel DeSantis successfully prosecuted this case.
