Commonwealth v. Tyrone Wiggins

Philadelphia—A jury found former Philadelphia Police officer Tyrone Wiggins guilty of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault and related offenses. The 51-year old man is convicted of sexually assaulting a woman over an 8 year period during her childhood. Wiggins spent more than 23 years on the police force. He resigned in November 2009, due to the criminal charges.

“The crimes committed against the victim in this case are horrifying, and worse so, that it was at the hands of a police officer” said District Attorney Seth Williams. “ADA Mark Cipolletti worked hard on this case to make sure Tyrone Wiggins is held accountable for these heinous acts.”

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 25, 2011. Wiggins’ bail was revoked and he was taken into custody.
