June 20, 2011: Commonwealth v. Stephen Lyde: 23 year old Stephen Lyde pleaded guilty to Aggravated Assault, Conspiracy and Riot charges today and was immediately sentenced to 5 to 20 years in prison by the Honorable Susan Schulman. Lyde was involved in the “flash mob” disturbance that occurred onSouth Street on May 30, 2009. During that incident 54 year old Thomas Fitzgerald was grabbed from bicycle and beaten by a group of young males, one of them was the defendant. Mr. Fitzgerald suffered brain trauma, fractured ribs, and a collapsed lung as a result of the beating. He was in a coma for nearly a week following the attack and has under gone intensive therapy and rehab. Along with the prison time Judge Schulman also ordered the defendant to attend anger management counseling and vocational training. ADA Jennifer Mitrick successfully prosecuted this case.
