March 7, 2012: 31-year-old Miguel Davilla pleaded guilty today to Third Degree Murder charges for a 2009 homicide, and was immediately sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison by the Honorable Linda Carpenter.
On February 28, 2009, Davilla attempted to evict 53-year-old Ruben Woodsen from a boarding house on the 700 block of N. Croskey Street by changing the locks on the door. The victim returned before Davilla had finished, and Davilla in turn responded by striking Mr. Woodsen ten times in the head and body with a baseball bat. Mr. Woodsen suffered multiple skull fractures as well as arm and hand fractures, and ultimately died from his injuries. Davilla then spent the remainder of the night building a coffin for Mr. Woodsen in the living room. Police, who were responding to calls about Mr. Woodsen’s wellbeing, found the victim lying in the coffin. They also found power tools and reference books on home carpentry scattered throughout the room. ADA Gail Fairman successfully prosecuted this case.
