September 13, 2013: The Philadelphia District Attorneys Office Insurance Fraud Unit (IFU) has charged 23-yar-old Mark Ellis with Attempted Theft by Deception, Insurance Fraud and Criminal Conspiracy.
In July of 2011, a 2010 Hyundai Sonata ran a light at the intersection of 16th and Berks Streets in Philadelphia and collided with a AAA Midatlantic insured 2002 Mercury Grand Marquee. The police accident report from the incident indicated that the Mercury was occupied by defendant Mark Ellis, who was driving, and one other passenger. However, AAA Midatlantic received notice that an additional passenger, Troy Gillis, had also filed a personal injury claim. After conducting multiple interviews with witnesses and other parties involved in the accident, IFU detectives arrested Troy Gillis for filing a fraudulent personal injury claim against AAA Midatlantic.
On September 13, 2013, IFU detectives also arrested Mark Ellis for Attempted Theft by Deception, Insurance Fraud and Criminal Conspiracy after he gave AAA Midatlantic an Examination Under Oath in which he allegedly made a false statement that Gillis had been in the car at the time of the accident. Ellis is next listed for a status listing in Philadelphia Municipal Court on September 20, 2013. ADA Dawn Holtz and Detective Gilbert Brook are specially assigned to this case.
