November 12, 2013: The Philadelphia District Attorneys Office charged 56 year old Paul Thorne with Insurance Fraud. Detectives from the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office Insurance Fraud Unit (IFU) began to investigate Paul Thorne after receiving a referral alleging that Thorne had misrepresented the facts of an accident in a recent claim with Donegal Insurance Company.
Thorne initially reported to Donegal Insurance that his 2009 Toyota Venza had been struck while parked on Angora Street in Philadelphia. Thorne alleged that the striking vehicle left the scene. On January 10, 2013, Throne made a statement to Donegal Insurance regarding the facts of the accident. Thorne reported that while driving away from a friend’s house he noticed that the front fender of his Venza was pushed into the tire. A tow truck driver arrived on the scene and took the damaged vehicle to University Collision. Donegal issued a check for over nine thousand dollars to Paul Thorne for damages to his vehicle.
Thorne’s statement was later contradicted by a letter Liberty Mutual Insurance sent to Donegal Insurance in February 2013. Liberty Mutual stated that their insured reported that his 2002 Volkswagen was hit while parked unattended on December 22, 2012. The insured observed the impact and took note of the striking vehicle’s license plate which was traced back to Paul Thorne. Liberty Mutual paid over three thousand dollars for damages to their insured’s vehicle.
The investigation revealed that Thorne had blown a tire while driving on Angora Street and struck the Volkswagen after losing control of his vehicle. On November 12, 2013, detectives arrested Thorne for misrepresenting the facts of the accident. He was charged with Insurance Fraud and is next scheduled to appear in Philadelphia Municipal Court for a status listing on December 16, 2013.
ADA John Doyle and Detective David Fisher of the IFU are specially assigned to this case.
